The Senior Lawyer is responsible for the provision of high-quality expert legal advice to support the statutory functions of the ICAC and to assist the Commissioner to identify and respond to strategic legal issues associated with the discharge of statutory functions.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Provide timely high quality legal advice and assistance in relation to the discharge of statutory functions by the Commissioner.
2. Advise on matters associated with investigations, including the exercise of powers, applications for warrants, briefs of evidence, management of exhibits and legislative compliance obligations.
3. Represent the Commissioner in the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory and in other courts/ tribunals as required.
4. Assist the Commissioner in the management of complex investigations into potential improper conduct, reviews and evaluations under ss23 and 110 of the ICAC Act and corruption prevention content.
5. Appear as counsel assisting the Commissioner in examinations conducted pursuant to the ICAC Act, including the management and administration of inquiry processes and procedures and contributing to the development of investigation strategies.
6. Provide innovative, practical and contemporary legal advice and expertise to support the resolution of sensitive and complex legal issues.
7. Participate in planning, policy and decision-making processes, regularly reviewing and reporting information, and making recommendations to improve efficiency and effectiveness. Actively contribute to strategic projects and participate in working groups and committees.
