The role

SCB operates using a client account management model. Departmental divisions are grouped into six accounts, and via account managers, they access a range of communication services through functional teams.

The Manager, Media and Issues is responsible for leading the Media team within SCB and setting the strategic direction of the function.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead, mentor and grow a team of media and communications professionals to develop and deliver innovative reactive and proactive media solutions that enhance health outcomes for Queensland health system consumers.
  • Provide specialist authoritative advice to the Director-General, Deputy Directors-General and senior departmental management on proactively managing significant media issues, crisis management, and building and protecting the brand and reputation of Queensland Health.
  • Provide effective leadership in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating media outputs across a variety of health topics, consistent with the strategic priorities of the department and the branch.
  • Actively develop and manage frameworks, systems, and processes to ensure the efficient and effective operation of the media and issues function.
  • Establish, build and maintain relationships with media outlets and practitioners across Queensland to facilitate both proactive and reactive media outcomes beneficial to Queensland Health.

The successful person

You will have demonstrated:

  • Proven ability to provide effective leadership in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating media activity, ensuring all output is aligned to strategic priorities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to work in partnership and build influential and productive relationships across organisational and sector boundaries, particularly in a time of crisis.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, particularly in a media and issues management context, in a high-pressure environment.
  • Leadership and people management skills within a media and/or communications environment, including the ability to effectively coach and mentor staff.
  • Ability to collaborate and contribute to the positive culture of a team with a track record of maintaining a customer service mentality and supporting all colleagues to succeed.
