The Disability Support Worker position is an integral role to the success of our services and the achievement of our organisational objectives. It is an operational role, providing direct support to the participants in our programs; ensuring high standards in the implementation of the client program outcomes. The Disability Support Worker supports the management team within impact to deliver a model of care that is identified as best practice.
Disability Support Workers recognise the right of young people to participation, inclusion and achievement. Specifically, the right for the young person to feel a sense of belonging and inclusion to their community. It is essential that the Disability Support Worker has the ability to initiate structured activities and programs that connect the participant to their therapeutic community and the wider community with the aim of building skills. The successful person in this role is self-motivated as a large component of initiative is required to assist the participant in meeting their goals.
Primary Objectives
Disability Support Workers are primarily responsible for the direct care of the clients within the program and have other responsibilities that contribute to the delivery and quality assurance of the program. Other responsibilities include the areas of data collection and administration but are not limited to these areas.

Responsibilities
Area 1-Provide Client Services and Programs
- Work effectively and efficiently in a therapeutic manner to assist participant reach their case plan goals;
- Implement the priorities identified in the Case Plan, and the specific plans within it;
- Support clients in developing and achieving personal objectives in all aspects of their lives;
- Encourage, facilitate and support positive contact between clients and their families, friends, significant others, health and educational services, other agencies and the wider community;
- Participating in regular home duties to ensure that workers role model appropriate levels of living arrangements for the participants;
- Initiate activities and programs that alleviate stress for the client and encourage positive participation;
- Provide personal care to participants who require this;
- Research the local community for opportunities for the client to participate in event and activities;
- Introduce the young person to services and resources they can use in their community to enhance social and life skills;
- Ensure all clients are treated with dignity, care and respect;
- Contribute to the operation of the multi-disciplinary team;
- Ensure the effective use of all written and verbal communication with clients and internal/external stakeholders;
- Provide induction for new clients in line with Apex procedures (in the absence of the Team Leader);
- Participate in meetings and contribute to the planning and development of client programs;
- Maintain the residential unit as a homely environment, in line with service standards.
Area 2-Data Collection
- Maintain accurate data and information systems;
- Ensure all data collection and reporting is on your shift;
- Contribute to ongoing and periodic reviews of the data collection system.
Area 3-Administration
- Maintain record keeping and filing systems on your shift;
- Ensure life story work is updated and completed on your shift;
- Contribute to the monthly highlight report;
- Ensure petty cash is completed and is correct;
- Ensure the car is maintained in a clean manner;
- Ensure the house duties are completed-cleaning, organising, bedding is replaced;
- Ensure all relevant reports are completed (family contact, medical, etc.);
- Contribute to the development and implementation of appropriate protocols, systems and procedures to maintain and improve the quality assurance of the program.
Area 4-Miscellanous
- Operate within relevant legislation, program guidelines including Occupational Health and Safety, and agency policies and guidelines;
- Understand your responsibility as a mandatory reporter and follow those processes as needed;
- Have a good understanding of your responsibility in regards to child protection legislation and duty of care;
- Additional tasks that are relevant to the position or as required.
- Physical Demands of the Position
- Prolonged standing and/or walking (between 75% to 100% of a shift)
- Sitting for prolonged periods of time (up to 2 hours)
- Stair climbing
- Repetitive and/or sustained squatting
- Repetitive slight stooping and slight twisting of trunk when sweeping, mopping and vacuuming
- Occasional lifting, pushing and pulling of 5-10kg in movement of furniture
- Repetitive reaching and sustained gripping in wiping of benches, fridges, ovens
