Masons Cafe Cape Tribulation is looking for a special person who loves semi remote wilderness but is keen and ready for the challenge of running a busy cafe.

We are looking for a mature, friendly person, who can get on with others in small community and step up and be the boss at work. Someone organized who sets the standard and motives the staff.

The owner is not looking for someone they can micromanage, rather someone that can deliver our products efficiently, effectively and profitably

1. General Information:

Live and work in the amazing Daintree Rainforest at Cape Tribulation! We are looking for a hard-working, reliable passionate person to run in our small but busy café. We have a regular bus trade with Tropic Wings, Uncle Brians and Cape Trib Connections and are open seven days a week.

Masons Café is situated right at Cape Tribulation and we also run a Store and there is a very popular swimming hole nearby. Cape Tribulation is about 135km north of Cairns and about 70km north of Port Douglas. It is a semi-remote location, but has mobile service, two shops and a number of bars and restaurants.

Beaches and fishing locations are nearby and while there are not many man-made attractions, the wilderness is superb.

If you are looking save money for that special holiday, a car, or even a house deposit, this is the perfect location away from city temptations.

The business is owned by a Family Trust which in turn is owned by Lawrence and Ann Mason. Lawrence and his daughter live in one house on the farm, and Ann lives in another. Both work in administration in business. This job reports to Lawrence Mason.

1. The Job:

The job is kitchen based, five days a week, rostering, ordering, employing and supervising staff, preparing food and drinks, and serving customers. The successful applicant will need to work the kitchen as well as manage. You need an eye for detail, reliability, good organization and time management skills, and the ability to multi skill. Part of the job is maintaining costs, both food cost and wages cost. You will be reporting to the owner.

We are looking for someone with kitchen experience, who has at least some history of management of a cafe. You must be absolutely reliable; the owner is not available to jump in and save the day. Our regular trade with daily lunch bookings is vital to the bottom line and they must be served every day.

For much of the year, this is a super busy cafe, and even in the Green Season, lunch times can be hectic. This job suits someone who is looking for a challenge. The current manager is staying with the company, and would be available for training and advice, but will not be working in the cafe, so it will be your business to set up as you like within the owner's guidelines.

Customer Service is important, we value our customers but offer service without servility. The location of the business means our tourist customers are everything from Maccas regulars to fine dining regulars and a mix of foreign and Australian. They all have different expectations, and we focus on our exotic meats and fruits as a basis for the menu.

Food Safety is important to us and following food safety rules and record keeping of same is a vital part of your job. You will be expected to liaise with the local Health Inspector when needed. Likewise, we operate within guidelines of the Liquor Act, and you must uphold those rules on behalf of the business.

Honesty is vital and we have zero tolerance for theft and scams. The business uses technology including cameras, wristbands and audits to maintain safety and security for owners and staff alike. As a manager this tech is available for you to monitor staff if needed.

The business uses SWIFTPOS so an understanding of SWIFTPOS back office, while not essential, would be a bonus.

The owner also has a farm, and selling tropical fruit smoothies, cakes and other product from the farm is an important part of the business, but we don't try to push unpopular items.

You need to complete an RMLV(Responsible Management of Licensed Venues) and a Food Safety Course Supervisor Course in order to reach level five wages.

We would prefer someone who will stay for a minimum of two years, and incentives may be available subject to a successful trial.

3. Wages:

Your trial will be paid at Restaurant Award Level 3, and upon successful completion of RMLV and Food Safety Supervisor you move to level 4 or 5 based on qualifications. You are paid fortnightly and have to complete online onboarding prior to starting. The trial would most likely be one month but may be more or less depending on qualifications.

Accommodation:

Housing is scarce at Cape Tribulation, however at times rooms are available and we don’t mind where you choose to live. We are only concerned that are at work on time! We have a rustic Queenslander staff house with three bedrooms (actually originally the owners grandparent’s house) which is available for rent. It is situated on large lawns, with the swimming hole nearby and beaches ten minutes' walk away.

The ‘best’ side of the house is reserved for managers if needed. This suits a single or couple but not children. The bathroom is shared.

The owner travels weekly to town, and thus you can buy via click and collect from a major supermarket and avoid local high costs. Or drive yourself.

Rent is $200/week ($220 for a couple) with all costs (gas, water and electricity) included. Rent reductions may be achieved retrospectively as reward for staying an agreed period of time and continuing adequate work performance.
