About the Role

The College of Science and Engineering is seeking a Research Associate to analyse time series of palaeo and modern proxies of environmental, ecological, and archaeological change, with particular focus on shifting environmental and human trends occurring in Australia over the last 1000 years.

Working under the guidance of Professor Corey Bradshaw, the Research Associate will use existing code and develop new approaches to analyse complex data derived from lake, lagoon, river, and wetland cores measuring various aspects of dated vegetation composition, fire regime, and climate fluctuation. Additionally, the Research Associate will design simulation models to evaluate how different proxies behave under various environmental conditions, aiding in the interpretation of outputs from time-series models.

To be successful in this role, you will:

  • Collaborate with Indigenous people, palaeo-ecologists, climatologists, and archaeologists, government agencies, and other relevant people for co-development of relevant analyses and data access.
  • Contribute to ethical, high-quality, and innovative research and evaluation through activities such as scholarship, publishing in recognised, high-quality journals and assisting the preparation and submission of bids for external research funding.
  • Contribute to and participate in training, exchange, co-design, and other events provided by the ARC Centre of Excellence for Indigenous and Environmental Histories and Futures (CIEHF.au).

Please note, this position will require some travel, including a minimum of three domestic trips annually.

About You

As the successful candidate, you will have a PhD in a relevant environmental or archaeological field, along with experience in coding and model development for data analysis.

You will demonstrate strong organisational skills, including the ability to be proactive and take initiative in problem solving, set priorities, meet competing deadlines, and make independent judgements. You will be a good communicator, capable of establishing and maintaining positive relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders.

As the successful candidate, you will also demonstrate:

  • Research experience, including publications in reputable journals, participation in securing competitive grants, and delivering presentations.
  • Experience working with Indigenous organisations (desirable).
  • Capacity to develop computer code to model the environmental and cultural proxies provided by the team (highly desirable).
