The opportunity

ASIO is seeking to fill technology leadership positions across a range of teams, including those delivering:

  • Developing highly specialised intelligence collection technology capabilities.
  • Oversight of the delivery and operational effectiveness of technical collection operations.
  • Design, implementation, and operation of ASIO's technology suite. These roles include — but are not limited to — Infrastructure, Cyber Security, Applications, Data and Product Management.

We value life and practical skills/experiences just as highly as formal qualifications and likewise value both breadth and depth of technical knowledge. We provide specialist training to our staff to equip them for their role.

A merit pool may be created to fill future vacancies which have the same or similar requirements to this position. This merit pool will be valid for 18 months.

Role responsibilities

As a Technology Director, you will:

  • Lead a team of technology specialists.
  • Seek out and implement continuous improvement, champion the adoption of good practices and ensure appropriate alignment to preferred patterns and architecture.
  • Be accountable for maintaining a high standard in technical outcomes and advice.
  • Drive the delivery of outcomes by collaborating and communicating with relevant stakeholders.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships internally and externally, including with international counterparts.
  • Manage all aspects of resources under your responsibility including budgeting, licensing, procurement and contracts.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation and work health and safety requirements, and actively implement, monitor, and recommend amendments to supporting policies and procedures as necessary.
  • Provide mentoring and support for the staff within your team.

What you will bring

We invite applications from people with the following attributes:

  • Ability to lead and manage a technical capability or service delivery team.
  • Experience with engineering and operational practices and processes which enable incremental improvement, frequent delivery and constant feedback loops.
  • Experience managing multiple streams of work, competing priorities and budget and resource capacity/constraints in accordance with organisational requirements, ideally within a security environment.
  • Ability to develop an understanding of the legal framework that governs ASIO operations, the security culture and rigour required.
  • Ability to work closely with stakeholders, including external partners and industry.

Desirable qualifications include:

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant STEM subject, including but not limited to Computer Science, Data Engineering, Data Science, Information Technology, Cyber Security or Engineering.
  • 5+ years prior experience in similar roles within the National Intelligence Community, Law Enforcement or Defence is desirable but not essential.

Location

These positions are located in Canberra, Sydney or Melbourne. Applicants would be required to relocate to one of these locations if successful. Relocation assistance is provided to successful applicants where required.

Employment conditions

Employment is under the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation Act 1979. Conditions of service are similar to those applying in the Australian Public Service. We recognise entitlements accrued under the Public Service Act 1999 and provide for continuation of superannuation under the Commonwealth schemes. Salary packaging arrangements are also available.
