Janet Clarke Hall (JCH) is seeking a qualified College Librarian and Archives Officer, with a minimum of two years previous experience, who will plan, manage, and maintain our small College’s Library services, resources, and facilities in order to provide for the informational, reference, and research needs of Janet Clarke Hall students and staff.

Janet Clarke Hall was established in 1886 as Australia’s first residential university college for women. Situated on the University of Melbourne campus in Parkville, we are now a co-educational home to 96 residential students from the University of Melbourne, RMIT, and Monash Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Today, we seek to nurture, inspire, and empower the thought leaders and change makers of the future in an on-campus residential community that encourages students’ academic success, intellectual and personal growth, social responsibility, and powerful belief in their own potential.
Objectives and Organizational relationships:
The College Librarian and Archives Officer will work with staff and students to ensure the smooth functioning of the College’s Library in terms of its collections, catalogue, and physical study spaces. The individual should look for opportunities to enhance the Library as a key resource of the College in its purpose as ‘a community that encourages students’ academic success, intellectual and personal growth’, developing the collection and ensuring appropriate Library support for students and staff.
The College Librarian and Archives Officer will maintain and improve the College’s archival collection, making material available for research as requested and preparing material for regular promotional purposes within the College.
The College Librarian and Archives Officer will have access to an annual professional development budget of $1500, to be used to benefit their professional knowledge and JCH, as approved by the Principal or Deputy Principal.
Reporting Relationships:
The College Librarian and Archives Officer will report to the Deputy Principal on day-to-day matters of the Library and to the Principal on matters relating to archives. The individual will respond to the overall strategic direction provided to all staff by the Principal towards the ethos and smooth running of the College.
The College Librarian and Archives Officer will employ and oversee the work of a Library Assistant from within the Student Club to assist in the smooth running of the Library.
Key Responsibilities:
Verdon Library
- Organising and supervising acquisition, cataloguing, circulation and return of books;
- Overseeing collection management in accordance with the overall development objectives for the Library and within budgetary constraints;
- Organizing new and renewing continuing subscriptions;
- Managing occasional book donations;
- Arranging the preservation and repair of special collections;
- Maintaining the Library catalogue in the college’s management system (Liberty/Softlink);
- Maintaining good order in the Library to ensure proper use of the resources and facilities;
- Providing training and supervision of a student Library Assistant;
- Preparing and conducting Library induction sessions for new tutors and students;
- Conducting information literacy workshops on demand;
- Assisting staff and students with their Library needs;
- Preparing regular reports for Council on Library related activities;
- Participating in library meetings organized by the University of Melbourne’s College Library and Archives Officers groups
- Any other reasonable duties as requested, from time to time, by the Principal.
College Archives
- Maintaining and enhancing the College’s archival collection;
- Preparing material for and responding to enquiries from occasional visiting researchers;
- Supervising the occasional loan of material for University and other exhibitions;
- Preparing material on a regular basis in support of College advancement activities
Qualifications and Competencies:
The College Librarian and Archives Officer will ideally:
- Possess a tertiary qualification in a recognised discipline, and display professional competencies and experience appropriate to their stage of professional development;
- Applicants should be eligible for associate membership of the Australian Library and Information Association or equivalent.
- Have experience in libraries appropriate to a College setting, i.e. in tertiary or secondary education environment or in a special library;
- Demonstrate evidence of clear organisational skills, high levels of computer literacy, and excellent aural and oral communication skills;
- Work well independently as well as with a small team; and
- Demonstrate an ability to act and to make decisions in a way that is consistent with the ethos of the College.
Remuneration and benefits
- base salary of $82,000 FTE pro-rated for 0.4 contract:
- secure car parking on the College site in Parkville;
- meals in College Dining Hall on working days;
- subsidised membership of Melbourne University Sport and associated facilities; and
- training and continuing professional development costs of up to a maximum of $1,500 per financial year.

The days and hours of this 0.4 FTE role will be agreed with the successful candidate but must include Monday AMs to allow for participation in the College's weekly all-team meeting.
