About the opportunity at the Medicare Mental Health Centre in Dubbo
The Medicare Mental Health Centre, funded by the Western NSW Primary Health Network through the Australian Government's PHN Program, offers a free, safe, and welcoming space for families and carers to access mental health advice, support, and services in Dubbo and Bathurst.
As a Family & Carer Peer Navigator, you will play a crucial role in guiding and supporting families and carers of individuals experiencing mental health challenges, psychological distress, or substance use concerns. You will help carers navigate the mental health system, access appropriate supports, and build confidence in their caregiving role-all while ensuring their own wellbeing is supported.
About you
Drawing from your personal experience as a family member or carer of someone with mental illness, psychological distress, or substance use challenges, you will use your knowledge and training to provide practical guidance, advocacy, and emotional support. As a Family & Carer Peer Navigator with Wellways, you will ensure that families and carers feel heard, valued, and empowered in their journey.
You will be comfortable sharing your lived experience in a safe and supported way, helping to foster hope and connection for other carers who may be struggling.
Key Responsibilities:
- Providing intentional peer support to carers and families
- Offering one-on-one navigation support to connect carers with the right services and resources
- Facilitating group peer support sessions to strengthen community connections
- Helping carers build their own resilience and capacity to support their loved one
- Encouraging engagement with recovery-focused services that benefit both individuals and their families
You will also need:
- Personal experience of supporting a person with a mental illness, or psychological distress and recovery
- Certificate IV/Diploma in Mental Health, AOD or tertiary qualification in social science or 1+ year relevant work experience in mental health sector or intentional Peer Support Training
- National Police Check
- Current Working with Children Check-employment
- NDIS Workers Screening check
- Evidence of right to work in Australia
- 100 points of identification
- NDIS Workers Orientation module certificate - free online course
- Willingness to work a rotating roster which may include weekends
The role offers part-time opportunities at 30.4 hours per week, with flexible rostering to support work-life balance. Operating hours include extended hours, with day, evening, and weekend shifts available. Penalty rates apply for applicable shifts.
