Disability Support Worker / Residential Care Officer

Job Description

To ensure the provision and supervision of premium quality care for people with intellectual and / or physical disability in the community, group housing and or institutions.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:

  • intellectual disability,
  • physical disability (paraplegic, quadriplegic, amputee, etc.)
  • neuromuscular disorder (such as cerebral palsy)
  • sensory impairment (deaf, blind)
  • brain injury (frontal lobe or temporal lobe syndrome)
  • spinal cord injury
  • autism spectrum disorder
  • neurological condition (epilepsy, narcolepsy)
  • degenerative condition (muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis)
  • Dementia (Korsakoff’s syndrome, Alzheimers)
  • Chronic Mental Health condition (schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder)
  • Acute health conditions and/or trauma
  • Alcohol and other addictions
  • Forensic history
  • Social disadvantage and/or complex needs
  1. To provide support and information to clients, guidance on emotional, recreational, health or other social welfare matters.
  2. To support a diverse range of clients, assessing clients' needs and planning, developing and implementing educational, training and support programs who may have the following:
  3. Help in supervision of residents within their community, in home or in a group home and assist in social and living skills and training to encourage independency in the community.
  4. To ensure monitoring and reporting on the progress of clients
  5. Assisting in servingmeals and performing any other housekeeping duties that are required.
  6. To be able to perform independently with people with disabilities on a one to one basis encouraging clients to developpersonal, community and social relationships
  7. To work cooperatively and effectively with a range of professionals and services to enhance clientcare.
  8. To liaise with the communityand local supportgroups or networksto encourage activities and training for people with disability.
  9. To educate clients’ behavioural standardsby compiling disciplinary reports and assistingin the implementation of any required remedial measures.
  10. Maintaining contemporary professional conduct, maturity and commitment to ongoing professional development
  11. Participate inaction based researchand implement outcomesin clinical practice
  12. To identify the needs of clientsand manage an approach to health service delivery
  13. Demonstrate the use of initiative and ability to priorities work and time management skills
  14. To work in asafe manner in accordance with Work Healthand Safety
  15. Comply with relevantlegislation, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
  16. Understandingof and commitment to continuous quality improvements

Essential Requirements:

  • The entry requirement for this occupation is an AQF Diploma, Certificate in Disabilities or higher qualification, or at least 3 years relevant experience. In some instances relevant experience is required in addition to the formal qualification
  • Up to date First Aid Certificate
  • Valid Working with Children’s Check
  • Up to date Australian Federal Police Check
  • NDIS Worker Screening Check

Essential Skills:

  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to liaise with clients, families / carers and staff.
  • Ability to adapt to changes
  • Organisational skills including time and case load management
  • Computer literate
