An exciting opportunity for a Principal Technical Consultant with ABL (Australasia) Pty Ltd, an ABL Group Company, to lead high-impact marine offshore projects. This role involves project management, technical leadership, and business growth. Work with expert teams, conduct offshore site visits, and drive excellence in marine operations.
What you will be doing.
As our Principal Technical Consultant, based in Perth, Western Australia, you will lead impactful projects, guiding clients from concept to completion. Your contribution will enhance marine operations across Australasia, collaborating with industry experts, conducting offshore inspections, driving business growth, securing new contracts, and shaping the future of global energy projects. Your key responsibilities would be:
- Project & Marine Operations: Lead and manage projects, ensuring high-quality deliverables while supporting marine operations, vessel inspections, and offshore activities.
- Surveys & Risk Assessments: Conduct vessel surveys (OVID, IMCA eCMID, MWS), Dynamic Positioning (DP) trials, FMEA proving trials, and risk analyses for offshore projects.
- Claims & Investigations: Assess P&I casualties, hull and machinery claims, estimate repair costs, and compile detailed reports for clients.
- Client Support & Business Growth: Advise clients on technical solutions, build strong relationships, identify new business opportunities, and convert leads into contracts.
- Industry Engagement & Compliance: Represent the company, stay updated on maritime regulations, participate in conferences, and maintain thought leadership.
- Training & Team Development: Mentor and train staff, collaborate with regional teams, and contribute to internal capability building.
- Safety & Quality Assurance: Ensure compliance with safety standards, improve work processes, and drive QHSE initiatives across all operations.
This role is based in Perth, Australia and the candidate should have the legal right to live and work in Australia. Flexibility towards working hours and locations may be required from time to time with a willingness to travel (including offshore) and work within a variety of time zones.
What we are looking for.
Ideally, you have 20+ years of experience in the Marine or Offshore industry, including hands-on marine representation. A strong background in marine consultancy, SME in dynamic positioning, inspections, marine surveys, and maritime claims is highly valued. Additionally, you should have:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher qualification in Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture or Chief Engineer (STCW class 1) with significant dynamic positioning, marine survey/maritime consultancy experience.
- 5+ years of leadership experience in engineering consultancy, particularly in the offshore and marine industries.
- Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with decision-makers and manage complex stakeholder interactions.
- Strong technical, operational, and analytical skills, with experience in creating high-quality technical reports and providing expert advice.
- 5+ years of experience in offshore project management, marine consultancy, maritime claims, and knowledge of vessel and machinery repairs.
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams, share knowledge, and create a supportive, collaborative work environment.
- Excellent communication skills, with strong decision-making abilities and the capacity to manage multiple priorities effectively.
Desirable:
- Degree in Marine Engineering or Naval Architecture
- Experience in rig moving operations and a solid understanding of MODU’s (Jack-Up’s & Semi-submersibles).
- SME in Dynamic Positioning
- Previous experience in similar roles with a strong understanding of complex claims and local repair facilities.
- Proven track record in authoring expert opinion reports and maintaining a strong client base in the maritime industry.
