Seeking qualified critical care and emergency veterinary nurse for full time employment
An opportunity has arisen for a full time experienced veterinary nurse to undertake high level nursing duties in a growing small animal clinic in Lewiston, South Australia. The successful applicant will be responsible for the daily care of hospital patients and will be required to work on a rotating roster which will include evenings, overnights, weekends, and public holidays as required. Some surgical nursing and reception shifts may also be included as required.
About us:
We are a small animal practice in Lewiston, South Australia. We are a busy, fast-paced practice with a friendly team that is very supportive of each other. Our clinic focuses largely on reproduction but we also have a growing pet owner base which rely heavily on us for the care of their pets.
Our practice is expanding in size and opening hours, and as such, we are seeking to fill a new role for a hospital nurse who will be responsible for the care of all hospitalised patients, particularly overnight, on weekends and on public holidays when we often have hospital and boarding patients in the clinic but are not open to the public.
Position:
The successful applicant will be responsible for the 24 Hour Care of critical care hospitalised patients under the direction of the attending veterinarian. They will be expected to follow treatment plans, update owners, perform routine checks and collaborate with other support staff to provide quality care to our patients.
The position will operate over full-time hours on a rotating roster and will include regular evening, overnight and weekend shifts as required. There may be times when you are expected to work independently, so you must be confident in all aspects of small animal nursing and able to follow veterinary treatment plans accurately and to a high standard. Emergency and Critical care experience is a must.
Qualifications:
Certificate IV (Veterinary Nursing) or Industry equivalent

Experience
- Minimum 5 years relevant post qualification experience in a small animal clinic
- Emergency and triage nursing
- Neonatal Nursing
- Proven experience working within a high paced veterinary clinic
- Experience in assisting with orthopaedic procedures and post op care
- Demonstrated experience in managing critical care patients

Duties
- Confidently handle and restrain animals
- Provide nursing care to hospitalised patients, including patient monitoring and health checking, feeding, grooming, and walking animals
- Preparation for all emergency and medicine cases, communication with doctors to decide pre-meds/induction and CRI’s if needed
- Perform sedation and anaesthesia for various procedures
- Setting up treatment plans for hospital cases on Smartflow
- Assist with diagnostic testing including sample collection, catheter placement, venipuncture, radiography, submitting and running lab work
- Ensuring documentation is accurate and complete
- Managing patients from admission to discharge and follow up care
- Administer treatments including injections and tablets according to treatment plan
- Have strong attention to detail, particularly when administering medications and monitoring multiple patients
- Perform diagnostic tests, blood sampling, urine analysis and x-rays
- Prepare animals for surgery and perform some minor procedures, e.g., dental hygiene
- Monitor anaesthesia and report changes to the veterinarian
- Assist veterinary surgeons with operations as required
- Communicate with pet owners about their animals, reassuring them about their animal's treatment
- Educate pet owners on animal health, including vaccinations, worming, flea prevention and appropriate nutrition
- Ensure that patient records are up to date by carrying out any relevant administration tasks
- Undertake stock management tasks
- Assist breeder clients with whelping information and provide support and advice
- Support veterinarians, veterinary nurses and anyone undertaking work placements
- Cleaning duties to maintain the cleanliness and hygiene of the practice
- Provide orthopaedic patients with post operative care and assist rehabilitation nurses.
The ideal candidate must be willing to undergo regular further education and be looking for a career, not just a job. The candidate must be willing to undertake overnight roster/stays at the clinic to provide overnight care to critical care patients.
The position salary range is $70,000 to 75,000 plus super, depending on experience
