What’s the job? Data Analyst PHIDU

The Public Health Information Development Unit (PHIDU) produces Australia’s leading small area socioeconomic, demographic and health data base, the Social Health Atlas of Australia. Join a small team in Adelaide updating and extending this highly respected product.

We are seeking an experienced data analyst, with high level skills in using MS Excel, to join the team at Torrens University Australia as a Research Fellow, initially to June 2026 (expiry of current PHIDU contract with the Commonwealth Department of Health, Disability and Ageing) with the possibility of extension upon further funding.

Reporting to the Centre Director PHIDU, the Data Analyst will, as part of a small team, provide analysis of data for online publication and presentation in the Social Health Atlas of Australia. Knowledge and understanding of the social determinants of health inequality is a necessary background to being able to perform this role.

Day-to-day accountabilities:

Compile, process and analyse data supplied by external agencies, using MS Excel

Update the data in:

o atlases for the whole population.

o atlases for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population.

o an atlas by Indigenous status.

o an atlas of child and youth health and of older persons.

o charts for remoteness areas and quintiles of socioeconomic disadvantage, current and over time, for the whole and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations; and

o undertake in-depth, geographically-based, analyses of health outcomes and health service use data.

Contribute to the maintenance of the PHIDU website

Undertake analysis of data using software including online tools (e.g., ABS TableBuilder)

Undertake special projects, as required

Job Details:
This is a fixed term role until June 2026, with the possibility of extension, dependent on the outcome of current discussions with the Australian Government with respect to funding to June 2029. Please note that the job is data-intensive and there is little opportunity for research or publication in academic journals

This is a full-time position; however, we are open to a part-time arrangement of 4 days per week.
Location is Adelaide, Wakefield Campus - the collaborative nature of the work requires that the successful applicant will work in the Adelaide office.

Who you are:

Minimum of 3 years working in a similar role in a health-related field

Knowledge of population and public health, including health inequalities affecting disadvantaged groups

Highly developed analytical and conceptual skills

Demonstrated high-level proficiency in data manipulation skills

Advanced MS Excel skills

Well-developed communication skills, including in written and oral presentation

Tertiary qualifications in Health Sciences, Mathematics (statistics), or similar

Capacity to work independently and also collaboratively as part of a small team

Desirable:

Knowledge of and experience using mapping packages such as ArcGIS

Use of other statistical software (e.g., SPSS)

Knowledge of and experience using in website editing tools i.e., Joomla

Broad knowledge of health information systems and their application to health planning, monitoring, and policy development
