About the Role: Lived Experience Worker - ECT
Join our dynamic and compassionate Mental Health Division, where we pride ourselves on person-centred care and innovation. Our ECT service is a key component of our broader mental health program, providing vital treatment to individuals with severe and treatment-resistant mental health conditions. The ECT Lounge is a calm, supportive environment designed to enhance the consumer experience before and after treatment, and is a valued space within our mental health services.
We are currently seeking a Lived Experience Worker to join our ECT team. This unique and newly established position provides emotional and peer-based support to individuals engaging in ECT treatment. Drawing on your own personal experience of mental health challenges – and ideally, of ECT itself – you will offer empathy, guidance, and reassurance to consumers as they navigate this deeply personal part of their recovery journey. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team to ensure that each person receives holistic, compassionate care.
What makes this role stand out is its emphasis on lived experience as a foundation for therapeutic connection. Unlike traditional peer roles, this position is embedded specifically in the ECT Lounge, where your presence and shared understanding help normalize treatment, reduce stigma, and foster trust in a clinical setting. This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about advocacy, recovery-oriented care, and transforming the way mental health services are delivered.
The successful candidate will have:
A lived experience of mental health challenges and personal recovery (ideally including ECT treatment) and a demonstrated ability to use this experience to support others in a purposeful, professional context.
Completion of, or willingness to complete, Intentional Peer Support (IPS) training or equivalent peer support qualifications.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage respectfully and empathetically with people in distress or uncertainty.
Capacity to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team, and an understanding of confidentiality, boundaries, and professional practice in peer work.
