The Role
An APS 6 WHS Officer – Safety Investigation will under broad direction, perform complex WHS work including safety investigations, assurance activities and regulator relations. As you gain experience, you will have the opportunity to work independently with reasonable autonomy and accountability to conduct increasingly complex WHS investigations.
Safety investigators must confidently exercise both initiative and judgement in interpretation of Defence policy and procedures. This work will contribute to continual improvement, in planning and policy development at all levels of Fleet Command, Royal Australian Navy and Defence.
The key job requirements for this role are:
- Flexibility, WHS Investigators may deploy at short notice to austere environments.
- Adaptability. This role has peaks and troughs requiring the ability to rapidly change focus from supporting other Maritime Safety Bureau work to the conduct of an investigation.
- Communication, advanced verbal and written skills to conduct interviews and write coherent investigation reports.
About our Team
Maritime Safety Bureau is an integrated team (combined civilian and military workforce) within Fleet Command of the Royal Australian Navy. Our team undertakes assurance, investigation and research activities to inform timely intervention of WHS and Environmental Management issues that could affect our workforce and Fleet Command capability. MSB is the centre of excellence for the provision and delivery of professional environmental and safety services in a timely manner to the Fleet Commander, Fleet Command elements and units.
Our Ideal Candidate
The preferred candidate will have:
- Knowledge of WHS and Environmental Management legislative and Defence policy frameworks.
- Ability to engage and work collaboratively with stakeholders in relation to complex issues. Identifying, anticipating and responding to stakeholders needs and expectations to achieve MSB, Fleet Command, Navy and Defence outcomes.
- Capable of building team and personal capability through coaching, feedback, ongoing self-improvement and professional development.
